                 {The Karen or Padaung tribe lives today in the Mae Hong Son area of northwest Thailand. The term ‘‘Padaung,’’ or ‘‘long necks,’’ refers to their elongated necks due to the multiple brass rings they wear. In early colonial Burma, long before it was officially called Myanmar, the Karen tribe, mainly consisting of farmers in the Irrwaddy and Salween Valleys, was considered a faithful servant of the British. However, after the British left Burma in 1948, many Karen villages were attacked and burned by the Myanmar army. Many Karen escaped to refugee camps in Thailand. There are some families of the Burmese Karen tribe that have now lived in Thailand for almost 300 years. Many have dual citizenship.

             Many Karen no longer practice this custom. But for those who continue to stretch their
necks, there are photographers, tourists, beauty contests, and other carnival events that make this practice a profitable choice. While refugees with long necks seem to be exploited without complaint, the choice is lucrative for tribes people who rely on tourism. }
